Heartbreak Ridge......
I'll start by saying the name is kind of a joke, I'm not being all emo over some tragic love thing. Okay now that's out the way, what am I doing and how did I end up with this backwards named place anyway?
Well as usual this place was not on any mental to do list , I was supposed to be doing something completely different and got all distracted after a conversation, and ended up with the falsely named Heartbreak Ridge.
I have this thing about the mainland.... please don't shoot me for anything I am going to say in this blog, its just my opinion. So yeah, as a general rule I.. well I kind of dislike the mainland. Its just random pockets of ugly for the most part and it annoys me. I mean its the biggest landmass in SL yet no one really does anything with it. A quick flick through the destination guide and there's a ton of carefully, lovingly created, well thought out places to visit.... all on private islands. I guess I can look at this from both angles having had the full sim set up and also working on shared space. I know why the private island set up is so attractive to work with. I mean you have full control of everything and nothing in view that you didn't put there. However.. I do think to a degree this is kinda wrong. I mean the mainland has been there from the start before the world and his wife got all hard over homesteads etc. I mean why has it become the norm to save all the good stuff for the thousands of isolated islands? Gem once said to me he was over all the private islands and at the time I just kinda smiled thinking yep because mainland is sooo great :| I'll never live this down but ya know I think I am finally with him on this.
It IS harder to work with the mainland but its not impossible and raises a few challenges. That's not a bad thing though I think its good to be pushed. As for anyone arguing the limitations of prims of the mainland. come on! thanks to mesh there are no excuses. The only limitation will be yourself... wow I feel all smug saying that but heh its true. Anyhoo the moral of the tale is ... why not make something of the foundation of SL? Why not make something great on the forgotten continents? Instead of being all precious on your isolated islands I mean is that not what SL is about community creativity? Then why the fuck not on the mainland where there IS community? Now I feel like braveheart!
So in conclusion......
Mainland isn't all that bad it just needs people to actually give a shit about it, and start filling those voids. As for Heartbreak ridge ... well where do you think I built it?
Heartbreak ridge... my contribution to making the mainland somewhere to enjoy.
